Term 1 – Week 2
Big Idea – Humans say ‘No’ to God the loving King and try to be their own King and this is called SIN.
Genesis 3
Lesson Background
This unit of work is an overview of the Old Testament from creation in Genesis 1 up to God’s promise to King David in 2 Samuel 7. The theme for the unit is: God always keeps His Promises.
Now the snake was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, ‘Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?’
In Genesis 3:1-6 The snake, who is the devil lies to the woman and creates doubt in her mind about God’s goodness. First, he attacks God’s word; Did God really say, “You must not eat from any tree in the garden”?’ (v.1b). Second, he totally contradicts God’s word; You will not certainly die,’ the snake said to the woman (v.4). And declares God to be wrong. Third, he sells the lie; If you eat this fruit, ‘you will be like God knowing good and evil’ (3:5). She will now be wise, she will be equal with God, and she could make the rules and decide what is right and wrong. He lies. It’s a lie.
What happens? When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it (v.6).
Because Adam & Eve listened to the snake and believed Satan’s lies and said ‘No” to God the Loving King who made everything and tried to be their own King. Therefore, SIN entered the world. It broke our relationship with God and evil & death into God’s good world. But God made a promise, he promised to fix the problem of sin, he promised to defeat evil and death and he promised to make a way for people the come back into a relationship with God the King. That’s God’s Big promise of the bible.
In summary Adam & Eve, said ‘No’ to God, the loving King and listened to the snake and ate the fruit from the tree and tried to be their own King.
