Term 1 – Week 11

Big Idea – Jesus is the powerful son of God

Luke 17:11-19

Lesson Background

The passage begins with the phrase, ‘Now on his way to Jerusalem’ (v.11a). Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem to die on the cross where he will complete his earthly mission – to die on the cross in order to save people from their sin. Jesus was travelling along the border between Jewish and Samarian land and he is met by ten men with leprosy (a nasty skin disease). They stood at a distance and called out in a loud voice, ‘Jesus, Master, have pity on us!’ (v.13). What’s so amazing is that a) These men were outcasts and unclean, and yet Jesus shows compassion on them and heals them from their leprosy, and b) He demonstrates his power. Jesus healed these men of their leprosy with his word. Jesus said, ‘Go, show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they went, they were healed (v.14). The simplicity is powerful, but it suggests that the key detail here is not in the miracle itself but the identity of the one who performed the miracle. Jesus is the powerful son of God who cleanses people of their sin. What’s interesting is that this miracle is focused on the response of the lepers to their healing. If we equate healing as God’s word often does as a synonym of ‘salvation’, we can see that this miracle gives us a commentary on the different responses to the message of salvation. Only 1 out of 10 the lepers return to Jesus and offers him thanks and praise for healing him and making him clean. The ‘loud voice’ begging for salvation is now a ‘loud voice’ praising God. Agony is turned to praise, and he thanks Jesus for salvation. The man commended by Jesus for responding in faith. Faith looks like responding in thankfulness.

Outcomes

Belief – Children will understand that Jesus healed the 10 men of their leprosy by his word.

This healing/cleansing of the 10 men with leprosy points us to the healing/cleansing of sin that Jesus offers. Behaviour – Give thanks to Jesus for showing us immense kindness. Get the children to think about all the ways God and his son Jesus shows us kindness and then pray and give thanks for them.
