Term 3 – Week 8

Big Idea – God is overjoyed when a person/sinner puts their faith in Jesus for we are precious to Him.

Luke 15:8-10

Lesson Background

This unit of work looks at God Big Kingdom. What does life look like in the Kingdom of God now and in the new creation? How do we become part of this Kingdom of God? How do we live as members of Gods kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ and what does it mean for eternity?

The three lost parables, 15:3-7, 8-10 & 11-32 are all told by Jesus in response to criticism from the Pharisees and teachers of the law, regarding his association with tax collectors & sinners, who complained ‘This man welcomes sinners, and eats with them’ (v.2). Jesus doesn’t share the same attitude as that of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, who hate tax collectors and mock the sinners, for His aim is to befriend these ‘undesirables’, and draw them to God, because God is a God who searches, finds and cares for the sinner. The way to God is through repentance. His arms are open wide to all people who will seek Him on His terms.

God will go to great effort and rejoice with great joy to find and restore a sinner to himself.

The parable of the lost coin teaches us about our value and worth to God. Jesus is like the woman who goes to great length in search of her lost silver coin. When she finds the coin, she calls her friends and neighbours and tells them to rejoice because she found the coin that was lost. The emphasis is on the joy and celebration that comes from finding what was lost. The point of the parable matches 15:7: There is much joy in heaven over a single repentant sinner. There is a great celebration of God and His angels at the recovery of the lost sinner. We are all like coin which has been lost, and through faith in Jesus we are brought back to God and this is a cause for great rejoicing.
