Term 3 – Week 1

Big Idea – Don’t worry but trust God because he cares for you.

Matthew 5:1-2; 6:25-34

Lesson Background

This unit of work looks at God Big Kingdom. What does life look like in the Kingdom of God now and in the new creation? How do we become part of this Kingdom of God? How do we live as members of Gods kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ and what does it mean for eternity?

The Sermon of the Mount is the name commonly given to the teaching of Jesus in Matthew 5-7. His teaching shows Christians what life is like in the Kingdom of God. It’s a set of behaviours that flow as a result of being members of Gods kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ.

In Matt 6:25-34, Jesus commands, ‘Don’t worry about your life…. And don’t worry about your body’ (v.25), for there is more to life than food and clothing. If we are to live God’s way in this world, then followers of Jesus are to trust in God, their heavenly father to provide for their needs, because he cares for his children. To help us understand this teaching, Jesus gives two illustrations from nature: The Birds (vv.26-27) & The Wild Flowers (vv.28-30), which teach followers of Jesus about reliance upon God in life.

Outcomes

The children will understand what faith is, and be encouraged to put their faith in Jesus.
