Introduction

14 ‘You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of the world are two distinct communities and yet all followers of Jesus are members of both. The challenge for those who are members of Gods Kingdom through faith in Jesus Christ is to retain a distinct identity as followers of Jesus and to live God’s way in this world. But why? So, they can make a difference in the world by pointing people to Jesus, the true light. Jesus says to his disciples, “You are the light of the world” (v.14).

This teaching of Jesus shapes our identity as his followers and our purpose in life. We live God’s way in this world because we are the light of the world. The way we live points people to Jesus, the true light, so they too might become part of God’s Kingdom through faith in Jesus. People need the light! So our job is to point people to it by the way we live.

To illustrate his point, Jesus gives two examples of light sources: a city/town on a hill and a lamp. First, Jesus says, “a town built on a hill can’t be hidden” (v.14b). It is impossible to hide a city on a hill – it will always stand out. Just like a lighthouse will always stand out. It is the same with followers of Jesus, we are going to stand out because of who we are in Christ. It is inevitable that followers of Jesus will give light. Next Jesus says, “people do not light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand. Then it gives light to everyone in the house (v.15). No one lights a lamp to give light in the darkness, only to then put a bowl over the top of it, because that defeats the purpose of lighting the lamp in the first place. Instead, they put it on the lampstand so that everyone in the house has light and can see. It’s the same for followers of Jesus, our very purpose is to give light. We can’t hide the good news of Jesus away. The very nature of light is to shine, when people receive the light of the gospel they will shine in a dark world.

So, Jesus says, “let your light shine so others can see it. Then they will see the good things you do. And they will bring glory to your Father who is in heaven” (v.16). Make every effort to shine the light of Jesus into the dark world through the way we live and the things we say in order to bring others to Christ, the true light. Followers of Jesus are not to be ashamed of Jesus, because they reflect the light of him who works his good purposes within us. People are living in the dark, but the solution is here. Christians are to witness to the truth and power of the gospel of Jesus Christ in their own life and to help bring others to Jesus.

Memory Verse

Matthew 22:37- 40 (NIrV)

Jesus replied, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul. Love him with all your mind.’ This is the first and most important commandment. And the second is like it. ‘Love your neighbour as you love yourself.’ Everything that is written in the Law and the Prophets is based on these two commandments.”
