Term 1 – Week 2
Big Idea – God wanted Abraham to trust his promises even when it looked impossible
Genesis 12-21
Lesson Background
The theme for the Bible overview is: God’s people in God’s place under God’s rule. The next series of lessons show how God began to act in human history, calling out a people – Abraham’s descendants – to live in covenant faithfulness to him as he brought reconciliation, salvation and blessing to all people through his son, Jesus. God promised to make peace with his people but his plan unfolded slowly over many generation. Through A, God established his covenant with his people. He promised A descendants, a land and the blessing of others through him (Gen 12:1-3; 15:4,5; 17:1-8) A believed God’s promises and it was credited to him as righteousness. Matthew 1:1 makes it clear that Jesus Christ is the descendant who fulfils this promise. It is he who brings salvation. God keeps his promises to A by doing what was humanly impossible by giving Sarah a son at 90. Here we see the fulfilment of one promise. It’s important that the children appreciate God’s faithfulness – his word cannot be broken.
