Term 1 – Week 10
Big Idea – People look on the outside of a person but God looks at the heart
1 Samuel 16:1-13
Lesson Background
God’s plan for salvation continued to unfold as Israel began to be rules by a king instead of judges. This lesson introduces David, the shepherd boy and future king, from whom Jesus Christ would one day descended. Samuel was a good, effective and godly judge, but the Israelites demanded a king so they would be like other nations. This was not only a rejection of Samuel’s leadership, but also of God. Saul was chosen to be king first but turned away from God and so was rejected by God as king. David, youngest son of Jesse, was revealed to Samuel as the future king and replacement. David seemed an unlikely choice to his older siblings, however God reminded Samuel that while people look on the outside of man, God looks at the heart. From the moment of David’s anointing, the spirit of the Lord was with David and he was a man after God’s own heart.
